Immigrants and Emigrants: US, UAE and the Philippines, 1990–2024
Topic: Population & Society
In this chart: Immigrants and emigrants by country
About this chart
Each balance weighs one country's immigrants — people born abroad who live there — against its emigrants — people born there who live abroad: the gold crowd on the left and the blue crowd on the right, each mark standing for a fixed number of people, women in the left block of each crowd and men in the right. The beam tips toward the larger crowd and lies level on the violet parity line when the two are equal. Each country's marks count a different number of people, printed beneath it, so crowds are compared within a balance, not across balances. Under each balance are how many times larger the bigger crowd is, which crowd that is, and both counts. The year runs at the top right. The animation runs the record over twenty seconds, holds on the last year for two seconds, and loops. The scrubber under the chart marks each year with figures and pauses on any of them.
Method
Each balance is one country's international migrants as the United Nations counts them: people born abroad who live in the country — its immigrants — against people born in the country who live abroad — its emigrants — each split into women and men, from the UN Population Division's International Migrant Stock 2024, for 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2024. These are the numbers of people living somewhere at each date, not the numbers who moved in a year. The picture moves from each date to the next; only the eight dates carry figures. The headline is the larger count divided by the smaller: a whole number from 10 up, one decimal below 10, and two decimals where one would read 1.0. Each mark stands for a fixed number of people for its country — 250,000 in the United States, 50,000 in the United Arab Emirates and 40,000 in the Philippines, twice that on a phone — and a last mark drawn faint stands for part of that number. For the United Arab Emirates and the Philippines the UN builds the immigrant count from records of foreign citizens where place of birth is not recorded; the Emirates' counts from 2010 are published to the nearest thousand, and the Philippines' is the same in 2020 and 2024, as published. Every figure on the page is computed from the rows the page serves.
