Net Wins of Every Current MLB Team, 1876–2025

About this chart

Each bar is one current MLB club, standing in a fixed order by the season it joined, and its height is that club's running net wins — regular-season wins minus losses: every season the bar ticks up or down by that season's figure, and a club's bar appears in its first season. Above the line a bar is solid; below it, a hollow outline. Both sides of the line share one scale, so a bar above it and a bar below it are the same length for the same amount; the scale grows as the bars need it and never shrinks. The club's mark rides just beyond each bar's tip. The line runs on into the panel at the right, which carries the season being drawn and the highest and lowest bars. The animation runs the seasons over forty-eight seconds, holds on the last for two seconds, and loops. The scrubber pauses on any season, and the speed can be changed in the controls.

Method

Each bar is one of the 30 current Major League Baseball clubs, and its height is that club's net wins — regular-season wins minus regular-season losses, added up over every season it has played; the postseason is not counted. Tie games, which baseball played until the rules made them rare, move a bar by nothing, and the season tables these figures come from do not record them at all. The seasons counted are the ones the league's own record counts: the National League from 1876, the American Association's seasons from 1882, and the American League from 1901. The National Association of 1871 to 1875 is not counted, which is why Atlanta and the Cubs both begin in 1876 rather than earlier. A bar follows the franchise, not the city or the name: Atlanta's bar runs unbroken from Boston through Milwaukee, Washington's from Montreal, Baltimore's from the St. Louis Browns, and every bar carries the club's current name and mark throughout — including the Athletics, who now publish no city at all. The bars stand in a fixed order, left to right by the season the club entered, and never change places. The 1981 season, split in half by a players' strike, is drawn as one season. The two sides of the zero line share one scale, set by whichever side needs more room, its running high-water mark rounded up to the next two hundred, so the chart starts small enough for 1876's two bars to fill it and grows as the bars need. The figures are Wikipedia's season-by-season tables for each club, read in September 2026. They are checked club by club against its table of all-time records as that table stood on 21 January 2026, before the 2026 season began — the current version of that table has since been updated through a season still in progress, and so cannot be compared with these. Twenty-seven of the thirty agree exactly; for St. Louis, the Cubs and Philadelphia the two sources differ by a single game, and the season tables, which each club's own decade totals support, are used. Three errors in the season tables were corrected against the league's published standings and are named in the data note. The 30 finals do not add up to zero — they sum to +1,525 — because the losses that balance them belong to clubs that no longer exist. Every figure on the page is computed from the rows the page serves.
