Oil Made, Oil Used: US, China and the UK, 1980–2025

About this chart

Each balance weighs what one country makes against what it uses: the gold vessel on the left holds what it makes and the blue vessel on the right what it uses, and the beam tips toward the heavier side, level with the violet parity line when the two are equal. Each balance's vessels share one scale, printed beneath it, so the vessels are compared within a balance, not across balances. Under each balance are what it makes as a share of what it uses, its name, the two amounts and which side it is on. The year runs at the top right. The animation runs the record over twenty seconds, holds on the last year, and loops. The scrubber under the chart marks every year and labels the decades, and pauses on any year.

Method

Each balance is one country's oil: what it produces — crude oil, including lease condensate, and natural gas plant liquids — against what it consumes, in million barrels a day, each year from 1980 to 2025, from the U.S. Energy Information Administration's international energy statistics. The headline is production as a share of consumption; over 100% means the country produced more oil than it consumed that year. The beam's tilt shows the gap between the two against their total; it has no scale of its own. Production here leaves out refinery processing gain and biofuels, which the Administration's wider measure counts; by that measure the United States produced more than it consumed in 2020 and again from 2022. The Administration reports no natural gas plant liquids for the United Kingdom before 1984 or for China before 2000, so those years count crude oil alone. China's consumption for 2025 is not yet published, so its 2025 balance holds the 2024 figure, and the data table marks it. Each country's vessels are drawn to that country's own scale, fixed across the years and printed under its balance. Every figure on the page is computed from the rows the page serves.

Data table

The oil produced and consumed by the United States, China and the United Kingdom in every year from 1980, in thousand barrels a day, from the U.S. Energy Information Administration's international energy statistics: made is crude oil, including lease condensate, plus natural gas plant liquids; used is the consumption of petroleum and other liquids. A figure the Administration has not yet published is held at the year before and marked. These are the rows the chart draws.
