Real Time Births and Deaths Worldwide

About this chart

A clock runs while one figure appears for every person born, and every person who died, in the world at 2025's rates; the ringed figures are the ones in the United States. The readout gives the births, the deaths and the gain so far. Point at any figure, or tap it, to read its numbers. The clock runs for fifty-six seconds, holds for three, and starts again. The scrubber under the chart marks the seconds and pauses on any of them.

Method

World births and deaths are the United Nations' World Population Prospects 2024 estimates for 2025 (medium variant): 132,399,173 births and 63,135,984 deaths. The US figures are the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's provisional counts for 2025: 3,606,400 births and 3,094,593 deaths; the final death count is likely to be slightly higher.

The clock spreads each year's total evenly over 2025's 365 days: one second of the chart is one second of an average day, not a live count. Each figure is one person. A ringed figure is a US birth or death, placed where it falls among the world's, about one birth in 37 and one death in 20. The world's population grows by births minus deaths; migration moves people between countries, not in or out of the world.
