About this chart

A clock runs while barrels pile up at the rate the world used oil in 2025: one stack each for the United States, China and the rest of the world, every drawn barrel standing for 100. The readout gives the barrels so far and the world's rate each second. Point at any stack, or tap it, to read its numbers. The clock runs for fifty-six seconds, holds for three, and starts again. The scrubber under the chart marks the seconds and pauses on any of them.

Method

The rate is the world's use of petroleum and other liquids in 2025, 104.28 million barrels a day, from the US Energy Information Administration's Short-Term Energy Outlook (September 2026, table 3a); the United States used 20.61 million barrels a day and China 16.58 million. Petroleum and other liquids covers crude oil products, natural gas liquids, biofuels and refinery gains, and includes oil made into plastics and chemicals as well as oil burned as fuel. A barrel holds 42 US gallons.

The clock spreads each year's total evenly over its seconds: one second of the chart is one second of an average day in 2025, not a live count. Each stack counts whole barrels at its own rate; one barrel drawn stands for 100 barrels, and the newest one fades in as it fills.
