Method
The figures are net federal receipts for fiscal year 2025, October 2024 to September 2025, from the Treasury's Monthly Treasury Statement: $5.23 trillion after refunds. Individual income tax brought in $2,656.0 billion, payroll taxes (social insurance and retirement) $1,748.3 billion, corporate income tax $452.1 billion and tariffs (customs duties) $194.9 billion; all other taxes, $183.3 billion, are excise taxes ($105.9 billion), estate and gift taxes ($29.5 billion) and miscellaneous receipts such as the Federal Reserve's earnings ($47.9 billion).
The clock spreads the year's total evenly over its 365 days, though real receipts arrive in lumps around tax deadlines: one second of the chart is one second of an average day, not a live count. The square's area is the dollars collected so far, every dollar sign $10,000. Shares are rounded to whole percents and may add up to 101.
