About this chart
A clock runs while stacks of dollar signs rise for the new bills printed at 2025's rate, every sign ten bills. When the clock stops, the stacks are redrawn by face value, every sign $1,000. The readout gives the bills and their value so far. Point at any stack, or tap it, to read its numbers. The clock runs for fifty-six seconds, holds for three, and starts again. The scrubber under the chart marks the seconds and pauses on any of them.
Method
The counts are the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's monthly production reports for 2025, added up: 4,915.2 million Federal Reserve notes with a face value of $99.1 billion: 2,278.4 million $1 bills, 448.0 million $2, 716.8 million $5, 160.0 million $10, 505.6 million $20 and 806.4 million $100. No $50 bills were printed in 2025. The Federal Reserve orders new notes each calendar year; 2025's $2 printing ran above that year's order range of 307 to 416 million. Coins are made by the Mint and are not counted.
Most new bills replace worn-out ones: the Federal Reserve reports that currency in circulation grew by 1.1 billion notes between May 2025 and May 2026, while about 4.9 billion were printed in 2025. The clock spreads the year's printing evenly over its 365 days, though the presses run in shifts: one second of the chart is one second of an average day, not a live count. Every dollar sign is ten bills; in the final three seconds every dollar sign is $1,000 of face value.
