US Population Growth by State, 1930–2025

About this chart

Each state, and the District of Columbia, is colored by where its population growth ranked that year: bright mint for the fastest tenth, then fresh green and deep green down to the middle, then dark red and coral red, and bright coral for the slowest tenth. The fastest and slowest tenths glow. Because the colors are ranks, about half the map is always green and half red; the bars under the map show how fast the whole country grew each year. The list beside the map names the five fastest and five slowest states with their growth rates. Alaska and Hawaii sit at the lower left and are counted from 1951; the District of Columbia is the dot off the coast. The animation runs the record over forty seconds, holds on the last year for three seconds, and loops. The scrubber under the chart marks each year and pauses on any of them.

Method

Each year from 1930 to 2025, each state and the District of Columbia is colored by where its population growth ranked that year. The populations are the US Census Bureau's midyear estimates for each state, as published by the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. DataSlapper computed each year's growth as the change from the year before, and ranks the states on the exact rates; the page shows them to two decimals. The Bureau of Economic Analysis's figures for Alaska and Hawaii begin in 1950, so the two states are ranked from 1951, their first year with a change: 48 states and the District of Columbia are ranked through 1950, and 50 and the District after. The six colors are rank groups: the fastest tenth, the next fifth, the fifth above the middle, the fifth below it, the next fifth, and the slowest tenth. A ranking always colors about half the map faster and half slower than the middle; the bars beneath the map show the national rate for the same estimates, and say how fast the whole country grew. Alaska and Hawaii are drawn at the lower left of the map, and the District of Columbia as a dot off the coast. The estimates are revised; these are as published when the page was built.

Data table

The midyear population of each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, and of the United States, each year from 1929 to 2025 (Alaska and Hawaii from 1950), as the US Census Bureau estimates it and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis publishes it, with each year's growth from the year before, the state's rank that year and its color group. Growth, ranks and groups computed by DataSlapper. These are the rows the chart draws.
